My quest to invest

Shopping local is close to my heart for so many reasons. It hasn't always been that way; I mean, I liked the idea in theory, but I didn't feel it as deeply about it as I do now. Now - I am a bit obsessed.

I wish there was a way to help everyone understand – without being preachy - how important it is to try and shop local. Here’s my attempt.

Shopping local is a beautiful thing - the more we frequent our local stores, the more those stores produce the cash flow to bring in more choices, the happier the customers are and the better those stores do, the more inspiring it is to others to start small businesses to bring even more choices ... not to mention more jobs and money to our town. When you think about it, it can be a win-win for everyone.

I do understand that shopping local can pose certain challenges. If you don’t tend to shop local, I think it’s probably because of these three reasons:

1. It’s cheaper out there.

2. A diminished shopping experience.

3. The unknown.

Let’s break this down.

1. “It’s cheaper out there.”

You may have the assumption that shopping local is more expensive, but is this always true? Let me bore you with a some fact and numbers:

· 68% of what you spend locally goes to your town.

· sales tax is less here

· Gas to travel outside of town is expensive

· Going to the biggie stores tempts you to buy more little extras since you are already out.

· You will eat one or two meals on your road trip – not to mention buying snacks and coffee.

· Everything you spend out of town goes hardly anywhere to support and enhance your own community.

Quick Math:

$50 spent on a local item =
$3.80 in taxes (7.6%) back into our community
$25 in retailer profit that goes into paying local employees and paying local bills including utilities, marketing, printing, supplies, etc.( local companies)

Extra retailer profits then hopefully go into other local spending or community donations.

2. “A diminished shopping experience.”

Let’s face it – getting out of town is sometimes a much-needed treat. I get it, I really do! I actually fall into this category the most. I love going to downtown Spokane and walking around River Park Square. I love me some Target … I could easily spend hours there. But here’s the thing. I REALLY love Newport and our community, and it’s for this reason that I’ve made it my motto to “Shop Local First!” That doesn’t mean I won’t ever venture out to the big stores in the big towns,but I’m just simply going to look here first. If we have it here, I will make every effort to get it here! I will Shop Local First! Give your local retailers a chance to WOW you! You may be surprised by all our town has to offer.

Here are some examples of how I’ve shopped local FIRST:

Last Christmas, I put Shop Local First into practice. Sure, I didn’t get everything here, but I started here and then finished up in Spokane and online. What I discovered is that I could find more here than I thought – and I knew this simply because I made the effort to check.

Back to school, I went to Ben Franklin first. I got all the basics and then some - then finished up in Spokane. Yes it would have been easier to just go to there first, but my $50 at Ben Franklin mattered. And that was important to me.

3. “The unknown.”

The last reason I think we may not shop local is simply because many are unaware of all the “hidden” gems we have in our town. Try stepping into that store you’ve passed 100 times before but have never stopped to look. After three years I still have people coming into Shanty for the very first time. I think Who Let the Girls Out has helped to bring awareness to what’s available here. And I love when people remark at how wonderful it is to have all these choices and quality products so close to home.

It is this last point - bringing awareness to what our community has to offer – that has inspired me to start Maggie’s Local Picks. I love finding great things in our area and I’m excited to spread the word about all Newport and has to offer. I love to see people surprised that I got it in “little ol Newport.”

I am so very glad you are still reading this. I was just about to conclude.J

As small business owners asking you to support us, shop us, enjoy us, it is even more important that we do the same. A very large number of the people who live here are small business owners. We can not expect our community to make the extra effort to shop with us if we are not going to, in turn, do the same...using the profits we make to put back into our town. We must support each other.

I hope this has helped, made you think a little differently, or reinforced how you already felt about shopping local. Join me in my mission to Shop Local First!

Grab your friend or love and do a shop local day. Go out to lunch, go to your favorite stores and go to ones you have never stepped into. Enjoy the shopping experience.

Who Let the Girls Out? Nov. 5th

An event that is all about the ladies and local shop love!

Who Let the Girls Out semi annual shop-hop is 2 weeks away!

If you have attended this event before, then you know it is all about having fun and it is all about YOU!

If this is your first time...well...you are in for a treat. At the first shop you will be handed a passport with a map to direct you. Go to each shop, get your passport stamped, enjoy the party (lots of tasty treats), then travel to the next. When you are finished and tuckered out, hand in your passport and you will be entered into a drawing for seven chances to win a $100 gift certificate.

The fall WLTGO is a great time to get a jump start on your Christmas shopping. Bring your list, grab your friends, some comfy shoes and get ready to get your holiday spirit on!

70's sophisticate...what i am craving!

like most of you i am ready to shed the winter blahs and clothes. i want spring and all it has to offer...sunshine...blooming colors...and wide leg denim!! yes you heard me WIDE LEG DENIM!! 70's sophisticate is my new obsession! can i tell you how this happen?

i go to market next week for spring and fall buying. so i have been really watching what the trends are and how that will transcend to us. i am certainly not over the top trendy so i really pay attenion when i start craving something. the spring report says the skinny has become such a basic (this means it is NOT going away...more on them later) that the designers had to go the other way to change it up and get a whole new look. skinny to wide...makes sense right? yes wide legs were done a couple of years ago but much more full/slouchy/baggy...sloppy. this season it's a cooler sillouette...slimmer in the upper legs getting fuller just above the knees or lower...with a nice size flare. 70's sophisticate ...WHAT DO YOU THINK?

p.s. hint..hint...hint...THE shoe of the season? check out the pictures...chunky, wood, platform sandals and clogs. Get the clogs and you can wear this fresh spring look right now...BONUS!

Hi Shanty-lovers!

My name's Megan Clark and I co-own hifrienddesign.com (You might know us by the cheeky wine bags you've seen at Shanty: 'lush' 'booze hound' and 'you're a hot mess'? Ring a bell?)...but most importantly, I'm a Shanty-lover, too, and have been for years. Maggie and I have been working on the boutique's brand since the beginning. I'm so honored to have been a part of the process and love how it's ever changing and growing.

Anyway. Maggie's asked me to guest blog today, so I have a teaser for you all for Valentine's Day. Myself and Kirsten Nieman of Restored Style worked up a little DIY project that we want to share (My business buddy, Jennifer, would have lent a hand too, but she was off cavorting in New Zealand - lucky duck!). It involves a little printing, cutting, crafting, baking....and then gifting!

i am totally doing this. i think i'll use kraft paper and silver pipecleaners.

One month from today!! It's that time. The winter Who Let the girls Out is Nov 6th. I love the winter WLTGO because it is when we debut Christmas..so its a super fun way to start the season off. FYI...I am lovin what we have been receiving. Super cute!

Wishin I Had a Coffee Table in My Kitchen

What is it about cookbooks? Beautiful Cookbooks? I know it's just not me!! How many of you love them...whether you ever make a recipe out of it or not? They inspire us to cook how we would love to if we had time. They accessorize our kitchen showing off our domestic personalities...again whether we actually use it or not. Look at your collection....does it tell your domestic goddess story?

We are receiving so many wonderful cookbooks at the the store that it's hard not to get a little happy with Fall. School starts, schedules start, and we gather around the table a little bit more. We have books for soups, slowcookers, casseroles, and baking everything.

I am loving them all but I am so excited about 2 newly published ones that really are just so great looking. Somewhat rustic...wholesome...made from scratch...earthy....

1/2 cup brandy

1/4 cup lemon juice

1/3 cup frozen lemonade concentrate

1/3 cup orange juice

1 (750 milliliter) bottle of dry red wine

1/2 cup triple sec (or peach schnapps)

1 lemon, sliced into rounds

1 orange, sliced into rounds

1 lime, sliced into rounds

8 maraschino cherries

add before serving 2 cups of gingerale

in a large pitcher or bowl, mix everything together except the ginger ale. refridgerate and let sit overnight for best flavor. add ginger ale just before serving. makes 6 cups.

if you are making for a large group or party it multiplies easily. to fill up the large glass container we had at the party we multiplied by 5.

Funny thing about my house and I....my walls are very bare. It takes a lot for me to committ to put something up. I am not an art collector by any means but for me if it goes up on the wall I have to adore it! It HAS to speak to me. What I do have ranges from garage sale and flea market finds, Shanty loves and photographs of my family

This is my first splurge.....

New Faces at the Shanty

My dear friends Melanie and Rushelle have been with the Shanty since the beginning. Beginning, meaning in my basement opening up the first boxes of inventory (I believe it was our Voluspa candles). I have been blessed to call them friends. I know without a doubt this last year and a half would not have been nearly as much fun without them. Both are loyal, calm, warm-hearted women and they've been a great balance to my crazy, scattered personality. We have been an amazing team. Melaine is the smarty pants in charge of book stuff (YUCK!) and operations. Rushelle is the store organizer (cleaning up after my tornado ways) and the assistant buyer (my helper).

Well.....we knew about nine months ago that Melaine was going to leave the Shanty floor when she had her little baby.

Congratulations!! Cora Grace arrived March 31st. Isn't she beautiful?!

Thankfully, Melanie is still staying behind the scenes and doing all that book stuff...plus a secret project we're working on. So keep your eyes out for her, you may catch a glimpse.

Rushelle....well she left last week to start working at a job she could not turn down..rrrrrrrr. I am terribly sad ...but know truly that change is almost always good. I know I will see her plenty and I have already made her promise to work Who Let the Girls Out?

Rushelle's last day...doing the thing we love to do after we close...yes we've been crying...the smiley pictures we tried for just weren't good at all..

I know you will miss seeing both of them. I think they will miss us too....

So who will be here when you come visit?

A new team I am really excited about! Mackenzie, who has been with us for almost a year now and is turning into a little fashionista. Alex, who started drinking coffee just to be good at making it...you go girl! And Angela, who thought she was only going to be an on-call fill in...but now we have her!

Back from Vegas with the Scoop!

We're back home and have lots to report!

First, we had some technical difficulties after the first night there, so I was not able to blog every night as I had intended. Sorry for leaving you hanging on the Top 10 Report . . . but we have it now, and it's good!

Second, thank you for all your comments and advice. We listened. We had a lot of requests for more generous fits. It's something we have heard in the store too. We agree! It's something we really want to work on going forward. Now that we've expanded our clothing area (don't worry our home and gifts are not going anywhere), we'll be able to better accommodate more fits.

So let's get started!!!

Top 10 MUST Haves 2010 Spring and Fall.

We loved this look. Shanty will be passing on the acid wash denim, but will bring some acid wash tees in to claim the trend a bit. We also think you could conservatively do this with the bomber jacket, grey or black bootcut denim or trouser, a white tee and some silver jewelry. Cute!

Black Leggings in all sorts of colors and tonal prints

Leggings +Jeans = Jeggings

Bring it home factor

Leggings are here to stay for awhile so let's get comfortable!

If you have been nervous to wear them or they take you to a year you thought you weren't going to go back to OR you just plain don't think you should here are some helpful thoughts ... then you decide.

Leggings on most of us should be worn as if they are tights (meaning bottoms covered) not like the runway models wearing them as pants. Stick with black ones to start your venture, a cute tunic top and some boots. If you feel frumpy in that, then try putting a belt around your tunic and throwing on a cardigan.

The Jeggings are nice to have because they are a heavier knit and may feel a little more flattering. Some Jeggings have faux stitching to show pockets and some will just be plain. We will have both. They'll be nice for summer even with a big White Tee (Key Item #8) and sandals.

FYI - We are bringing in some great tunics for spring and summer!

Comfy!! Again great with leggings. We love the denim and white. Easy to wear. Use a belt to add some shape. I think these will be nice to throw over our swimsuits and jump in the boat too!

Cardigans are easy. We love them. They are a forever trend. Definitely invest in a slouchy or boyfriend silhouette. Again works well with tunics, leggings and skinnys. A lightweight slouchy cardigan is a great look for lakeside living.

Okay so obviously ... well maybe not obviously ... we don't see you all walking around with our bustiers on the outside your tee's but we do love using the lingerie details. Satin and silk blouses that look really feminine and sexy with dark denim and sandals for going out. Try it with slouchy boyfriend jeans for a funky, hip look.

FYI Could not stop buying blouses ... ruffly ... floral ... nude tones .... there has to one you'll love.

We are still not sold on pleats ... and certainly not the carrot top (someone please remind me of this if you see it here EVER! Sometimes things grow on you if you're subjected to them long enough YIKES!)

However, we do think this works again with the boyfriend jeans and twill and cargo pants. This would be a great time to have an excuse to buy a pair of khakis in the next size up. Also if you are one of those lucky gals that has been sticking to your getting fit New Years Resolution and have that pair in your closet that are too big because of it ... you have been rewarded! Here's the must though...ROLL THEM UP ... and do it sloppy!!

This is an easy one. Easy to do ... easy to wear....goes with everything Spring ... shorts, denim,

lounge pants, and leggings. Some look great by themselves with their "oops I'm falling off the shoulder look" and some are great paired with a fitted tee underneath.

We made it! This will be a quick recap because its late and we have a big day tommorrow. Major fashion looks were seen in our 30 minute, Disneyland, zigzaging line, at the airport, waiting for the taxi. Couldn't help but see all the cute boots/shoes...combat boots, ankle boots and over the knee black boots. Skinnys and boyfriend denim on everyone. Black leather bomber jackets.....cute!! So much fun! Can't wait to hear what you want...were on it!

Tokyo Milk bath and body `objects of desire` is everywhere in the press and now you can find it here. I love it! The line includes thier sought after perfumes along with soaps, candles, lip balms and bubble bath. The scents have a vintage vibe that has you asking “what does this remind me of….” The packaging is beautiful along with being edgy cool. It is the perfect little gift….but definitely puts you in the “one for them and one for me?” dilemma.

Dead Sexy #6 (google it…it’s all the rage) is the #1 scent and is made up of Deep Vanilla, Exotic Wood, White Orchid and Ebony. We have it in the perfum, bubble bath and candle. Sorry about the pictures...Im trying to be mystereous...haha

Whew!! Is Christmas over? Is it just me or did it seem to go so fast this year? Fast or not, we sure enjoyed it and all of you who visited us during the season. Okay, two food blogs in a row, I know! I can't help it, though, because I have to share this! Rushelle and I are part of a great cooking club that meets once a month. She was in charge of the appetizer this week and was looking for something simple AND impressive ... hard to find. Well, she did it! She found this recipe on the Food&Wine website, so you know it has to be good.

It calls for Fig Jam, and guess what? We have the delicious Fig Butter from Stonewall at the Shanty ... it was perfect! I would recommend this for any entertaining you may be doing this holiday season. Click here for the full recipe. Enjoy!!

Make Cake

Melissa Gray is a National Public Radio (NPR) employee and author of a brand new cookbook, All Cakes Considered. Since noboby looks forward to the start of the work week, Melissa had the great idea to bake a cake every Monday for her co-workers.

Her mama used to say “cake brings people together.” She wasn’t a pro, she just wanted to make cake. So she tried many recipes, from her grandma's to Paula Deen’s. After a year of tweaking and perfecting, she put the company's favorites in this book.

Wouldn't this be a great gift?...add one of our cute vintage style aprons with this and someone is going to squeel with delight!

I loved the cover so much I took it home just to make my kitchen look cool. Instead something else happened…. I don’t know if it was because the kids were being perfect, the house had miraculously stayed clean from the day before or my head was, for the moment, clear of all the “to-dos.” But I decided MAKE CAKE!

After choosing the recipe on page 122, Paula Deen’s Grandgirl’s Apple Fresh Apple Cake from Georgia, I got Caden and Norah in their aprons, my Kitchen Aid Mixer out of the closet (dusted it off) and we got busy. We were measuring, chopping, mixing, and giggling. It was so much fun!

When David came home the house smelled delicious, the kids were happy….and there was a beautiful cake sitting on the counter. If he didn’t see the kids he probably would have thought he was at the wrong house.

It was the perfect day!

I have since made this cake three times: Thanksgiving, Black Friday at the Shanty and for a friend. It is so so good. It's rustic looking, yet insanely moist. Everyone loves it and wants the recipe. I think I am going to try "The Man Catcher Sour Cream Pound Cake" next….not because I need to catch my husband....but boy, if he liked the Apple Cake……..

Freakin Cute Jeans!

I love Jeans! I love our Jeans! So I am always excited to get in new pairs. We got 2 new styles in today and I am ESTATIC…that’s a fancy word for HAPPY (Norah has me reading a lot of Fancy Nancy lately). I am showing them below but want to disclaim my pictures a bit. I am working on my photo skills….send any helpful hints my way.

This first style is a skinny jean. They have the coolest back pockets and are super soft with a great med wash. Put some boots on and your ready for one of those kickin’ it days or getting your list of holiday errands done. Put your heels on and add a top with a dash of sequin, sparkle or ruffle and your ready for some holiday mingling. Cool @ $68.95

This second style is a trouser jean (picture does not do it justice…you’ll have to take my word). I am wearing them as we speak. The wash is darker and the fabric is a lighter weight so they are great for work or dressing up. The pockets have a simple yet interesting detail making it easy to wear with tops that go over them (no bulkiness). Lastly and my favorite is they are flared just right to make even short legs look like runway legs. This pair is just perfectly perfect @$68.95

Again, apologies for my picts...the inseams on both styes are 33.5 inches not as short as they appear.

Trellis Open House

I had the most fun Friday. My dear friend Jen, (I’ll write so much more about her later) along with Darcee, Sonia, Judy and Connie, own a great shop in the Spokane Valley called the Trellis MarketPlace. The gals each have individual businesses within the Trellis and each fills a niche from Chic to Traditional home decor, Garden to Kitchen, Stationary to Jewelry and even Children’s .

They were having their annual Christmas Open House on Friday and Saturday, and had closed down for three days to get ready for it. WOW did it look great! Friday I went to help out…and shop.

Jen owns Robin Egg Blu, which is gorgeous…..it is French Country, it is feminine, it is soft…..oooo it is so magical.

Whew! We did it! The third Who Let the Girls Out was a great success!

I have to take you back a bit to give you the inside scoop to our Mad Dash to open. Earlier that week we started the huge task of re-doing the store.

I had two new display fixture I had found and love!! One was an old chicken coop I rescued from a neighbors farm that my husband cleaned up and put casters on. The other is a old scaffolding table I think...cool... and industrial, that I purchased at Rivers Edge Treasures (one of the WLTGO shops) We also had tons of new merchandise to put out. Christmas (so excited), Childrens, Accessories and much more.

For three days Rushelle and I worked very long hours to get it all out...we were bound and determined for Saturday morning before opening to be relaxing, not rushed,...ahhh so much for good intentions. Friday night I made a call to my cousin Tif and my dear friend, graphic designer, mastermind of all Shanty’s art, Megan, who were planning on coming and doing the event...”Help I said! Please come early and help us open....we still have stuff everywhere” “why of course they say”.

So Saturday morning, I’m still putting up Christmas with rollers in my hair. I have Megan, Tiffany, Mackenzie and Rushelle and they are doing everything else....getting food ready, cleaning up after me, tieing bags and running to the store for last minute things. Okay, so in the past WLTGO the first hour people trickle. This is what happened at nine...We yelled it’s time...I stuffed leftover stuff in boxes...Everyone is grabbing anything left on the floor.....someone yells “Maggie your rollers!” Yikes!...and we are OPEN! Cars began pulling up instantly. I went out to my car to finish putting on my makeup and decompress for a minute. As I sat there and watched car after car pull up I knew this was going to bigger than the previous two......

When I walked back in we were in full swing. Many people had made us there first stop because we have our coffee cafe were we serve awesome espresso drinks...or could it have been they knew we were serving Shanty’s Signature Mimosas (sparkling wine, OJ and pomegranate seeds) and Ooey, gooey treats made by my friend Pam Waco, especially known for her Pumpkin Cookies with Maple Frosting. Whatever the reason...the action continued the whole day.

5 days and counting until Who Let the Girls Out!! Our third WLTGO is Sat the 7th and starts at 9:00. This is actually when it all began last year.

The Seven Shoppes had an idea to show how banded together we could make for a well rounded great shoppping expierence for our amazing local community and as a destination spot. We had no idea however that the event would have the turnout it did and how much fun it would be. I remember getting in my car for just a minute to take it all in. I drove around town....cars we're full of laughing women usually in multiples (it was definetly a bring your friends event) everywhere. Our town was hopin...I was so proud of our community.

Everyone kept asking "when are you going to do this again?" We thought how could we say next year when that seemed so far away...so we decided we'll do it again in the spring!! With some expierence behind us and more help in the stores we had another great Spring WLTGO.

So here we are! November 7th it happens again. Some things remain the same...good food and drinks at every store, lots of laughter, all the stores have there best of the best out...Christmas makes it debut. You still grab your passport at your first stop, visit every store and have it punched then turn it in for a fabulous prize. What IS different this time there will be 7 drawings instead of 1. Each of the Seven Shoppes is putting together a prize from their store. Now I think all the prizes will be pretty great but here is one that I think is extra extra cool. Rivers Edge Treasures prize is going to be a room make over!! They come in and take what you have...even if its something hidden from your garage and renovate your whole room. I just had it done at my house and it was amazing...(thats for a whole other blog...stay tuned)

We did it! our first time as a vendor at a vintage show. I've gone to many...but I've never been on the other side. We couldn't have picked a better show than the Madhatter put on by Celia and Gladys of JuneBugs. They didn't miss a detail. It was charming, the food was delicious and the atmosphere was full of energy.

Getting Ready For the Autumn Open House

It's almost time!! The Autumn open house is Saturday and we are very excited. UPS is bringing us new items everyday! It's a new season at the Shanty. We have Big Buddha Purses, Pick Up Sticks Jewelry, scarves, the cutest kids hats you've ever seen, and more Naughty Betty stationary...those cards that crack us up!!...and that's just getting us started! Farm House Chutney....Yummz!

This is the Farm House Chutney recipe we will be serving at the Autumn Open House. It is delicious!!

2-8 ounce pkg. cream cheese softened
3 TBL curry powder
1 tsp salt
1 jar Old Farmhouse Chutney ( Grab it at Shanty)
2 bunches scallions sliced
10 strips of bacon, cooked and drained well and crumbled(or good bacon bits)
1/4 cup finely chopped smoked almonds

1. In a small bowl, combine the cream cheese, curry powder, and salt. Stir till thoroughly mixed.
2. Spread cheese mixture on bottom of quiche dish.
3. Puree the chutney in a food processor. Spread on top of the cheese mixture.
4. Spread the scallions over chutney. Sprinkle the bacon and almonds on top.
5. Serve w/wheat crackers, melba toast, pita chips.

NOTE** This recipe is the pretty version. At the party I mixed it all together.

We've been getting so many great things in to cozy up your home for fall. Here is a little tour around the store....just a little.....

Archipelago Candle Paramour, a blend of pomegranate, papaya and Mango, smells sooooo good!

I love this bird cage! I think it would be a great table center piece and can be changed for different seasons. Imagine white pumpkins in it for fall, and vintage antique glass ornaments for Christmas.

Numbered ANYTHING is the trend in home decor right now. These votives are so cool. You can grab a random number that speaks to you or pick one that means something...like a special date.

Shanty is Turning 1

We did it!! We made it!!! and we owe it all to you. We turn 1 Wednesday July 1st. We want to thank you so we are throwing you a party. Come celebrate with us. All day we are going to have 16 oz coffee drinks for $1.50. Complimentary treats...cupcakes anyone?? A gift with purchase....yes every purchase (excluding the coffee drinks) you will get a present from us. I think you'll love it too.

Then after 4 we are having a Garden Party with yummy tidbits and WINE. If you have ever been to our other events, Shanty After Hours or Who Let the Girls Out you know how we like to throw a party....if not this is your chance!!

The little house on Union

Shanty is turning 1 July 1st and I thought this would be a great time to tell the Shanty story in the shortest form I can. Many people ask about the little house on Union and how it came to be Shanty....

7 years ago I moved to this little town to be with my best friend and the love of my life David. Always knowing "someday" I'd have a store, but also a dreamer....I would drive down Union Street (a side street that turned into a one way main street) and look at the little homes that needed a lot of work. I always said to David "If one of those houses ever comes up for sale I WANT IT!! " Well one day he comes home and slaps one of those For Sale flyers for N.235 Union on the counter. Let me tell you we were in no position to buy a major fixer upper, renovate, and open my dream at that point, but this was it! I made it happen...very creatively. The big bonus was we had great renters that were in it and had no intentions of leaving anytime soon...so we had time to sit on it and wait for life to catch up.

After a couple years and a couple of sweet additions to our family, our kind renters were ready to move out. It still didn't seem like the right time yet to move in on my dream ...did I say two sweet LITTLE kids....so we decided to just clean it up a bit and rent it a while longer. I remember David and I over at the house, inside....it's in really bad shape....we are talking about what to do to make it livable for the next renters and all I can think of is...were my register would go, what wall would need to come down....would it be possible to just do it? It was that day, that moment that I knew...I always dreamed it but I don't think I ever believed it until that moment. That's how it happens sometimes I think...dreams....you just decide. You decide, make a step, then the other steps just happen. It's not brave....its just??????

2 years later and a lot of work (Thank You David, Mom and Dad, Melanie, Rushelle, Rob and everyone else that had a hand in it and encouraged us), a lot of sacrifices (Thank You Caden and Norah and David again), we were ready to make it official.

I remember the morning of July 1st barely. Melanie, Rushelle and I were at the store very early going over any last minute things we could think of. We toasted to Shanty and our hopes with Mimosas. Then we tore down the "Opening In July" sign. Walked outside and placed our old metal OPEN sign on the chair and crossed our fingers people would come.

They came!! (THANKS Janice and Sharon Martin, our first customers) Every family member, every friend and so many new faces that we now call our Shanty friends. We received so much encouragement, kind words and praise. I felt like saying Sally Fields infamous words...."they like us...they really like us"

So here we are 1 year later. Check back soon to see how we will be celebrating this great milestone!! This will be a celebration of THANKS! to all of you.

Who Let The Girls Out

What a day! Our second Who Let The Girls Out, looking to be a semi annual event, was another great success. Success showing in the form of a lot of smiles, laughs, and ladies. For anyone that didn't go, WLTGO is a progressive shopping party. There are 7 fabulous shops involved (more about them soon). You start at any shop of your choosing, grab a "passport", visit each one and get your passport stamped (no purchase required), at the last shop turn in the passport for a chance to win a spectacular gift.

We were serving Strawberry Mint Sangria (recipe in our Sangria book),our Lemon Curd Tiny Pies (couldn't get enough from our Shanty After Hours) and Chocolate Carmel Brownies. The weather was beautiful so everyone was able to enjoy our "Garden Party" backyard, which included fighting over who gets to sit in the vintage brown porch swing and smelling the fantastically huge, in bloom lilac bush!!

The big winner of the day....the lucky gal who won the fabulous gift basket valued at over $350...is....drum roll.....Mimi Hurd!!!! Yah Mimi!! We are so glad you loved everything.

Thanks to everyone for coming and making Who Let the Girls Out so special. Keep a look out for the next one, sometime in November....great time to start your...dare I say?....Christmas shopping?

Shanty After Hours Highlights

Last night we hosted our second Shanty After Hours. We had a fabulous time staying open later, chatting with Shanty friends, and meeting some new ones.

The hit of the party was our well loved GRACE hats. We had just received our first Spring order that morning. Our hat lovers know that we only get a limited amount of each style to ensure each person will have something really special. And WOW do they ever sell out fast! We all know hats are great for a bad hair day...but have you learned the secret of wearing a cool hat to be perfectly stylish when you're in a hurry? No matter what your rush, you always have time to plop on a hat, add mascara, lip gloss and you are chic and out the door. Try it. Its invigorating. Our next shipment will be soon....

We also served some tasty wines and fantastic food. Favorite wines included a California White Table Wine, Menage a Trios, and Ste. Chapelle Soft Red Wine. Both can be purchased at the Kitchen Shoppe. We loved featuring some of our amazing food lines. Dulcet Cuisine - condiments and spices you can use to WOW your friends, and Sticky Fingers Lemon Curd - like tasting a little bite of sunshine in your mouth.

The Story of the Dressing Room Shoes

If you've been in our dressing room, you've surely seen them. Maybe you even secretly put them on....what pair of pants doesn't look better with six more inches of leg!

These shoes are a symbol of a dream I had long before I knew it could be a reality.

Five years ago, when the Shanty was just a "someday dream," David and I were heading back from a long weekend of camping by Lake Chelan. One of the little towns we were going through had THE sign - "Flea Market Ahead." Well, David knows...if I see it, I must stop. He usually likes poking around himself, but this time he waited in the car. I'm pretty fast at these things. It either jumps out at me or not. This particular flea market wasn't anything to write home about, but as any Finder knows, there is almost always something that can't be passed up. I found a few things...not sure now what they were...but they were the reason I had to go to the cash out area. And that is were I found them. THE SHOES!...underneath a table, thrown about. I grabbed them. I knew. The cashier asked "you want those?" YES! $1.00!SOLD!

When I got back to David to show him my finds, he looked at the shoes and said "What?" I said "Someday these will be in my dressing room" Someday...

Five years later as I was putting the last of Shanty together, David brought in a load of boxes. In one of the boxes he had found the shoes."Remember," he said "For the dressing room."

Someday Dreams are important. Live as if they are going to happen and just maybe they will.
